Billy G. Buchanan, 74, of Paoli, passed away at home on August 1, 2024 surrounded by loving family and friends as peacefully as one could hope. Born on September 20, 1949, in Valeene, Indiana, Bill was the son of Loren H. and Eva Mae (Mattox) Buchanan. He married Barbara Cole on February 20, 1996. Bill proudly served in the Army National Guard and later retired as an operator for Local Union 181. He was also a dedicated farmer, skilled carpenter, avid horseman, mechanic and general master of all trades. There wasn’t much he couldn’t do or at least tell you how he thought it should be done. He was often seen at Dinky’s or at a local auction where he never met a stranger and wasn’t afraid to raise his hand to bid on a tractor or goat (or 15) that he took a liking to.
He was lucky enough to be the beneficiary of a donor heart which sustained him for an extra 22 years on this earth and he never wasted or wasn’t thankful for a minute of those years. His life was lived freely in the country, on his own terms and luckily shared with many friends in the rolling hills of southern Indiana – a tradition he was able to pass on to those close to him. The stories are many and will continue to be told with laughter and love for years to come. He will be missed dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Buchanan, and his three sons: Billy Buchanan (Diane) of St. Anthony, Toby Buchanan (Britta) of Larchmont, NY, and Travis Buchanan (Kari) of West Baden. Bill also leaves behind his stepchildren: Steve Blankenbaker (Charlene), Scott Blankenbaker (Amber) all of Paoli, and Tara Little (Doug) of Hardinsburg. He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn Warren (Ronnie) and Bonita Walton (Doug) of Paoli, along with several beloved nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Loren Eugene and Roger, and stepson, Brian Blankenbaker.
Visitation for Bill will be held on Monday, August 5, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at McAdams Mortuary. His funeral will take place on Tuesday, August 6, at 11:00 AM at the mortuary, with Bro. Harvey McAdams and Bro. Dave Manship officiating. Burial will follow in the Valeene Cemetery. For condolences visit mcadamsmortuary.com.
